Hi everyone,
Welcome to Featured Friday Edition #21- Garter toss? hmmm. The garter tradition originated back to the 14th century. In parts of Europe the guests of the bride and groom believed having a piece of the bride’s clothing was thought to bring good luck. They would actually destroy the brides dress by ripping off pieces of fabric. Obviously, this tradition did not sit well with the bride, so she began throwing various items to the guests – the garter being one of them.
It tends to be 50/50 whether a bride and groom choose to have the garter/bouquet toss or forgo it all together. Some people are sick of being forced out onto the dance floor, just to be flagged single and available in front of everyone. Others love the fun it brings to the party and would not do without. Beyond the details of the actual tossing itself, let me first say that I think wearing a garter is a must. It’s an extra touch that is something you can wear and then pass down to the next generation. It can then be your daughter’s something borrowed or old. Whether people see the garter or not, it’s a cute touch to your attire. IF you are actually going to toss and are wearing an heirloom or garter you want to keep, be sure to either wear 2 or make the change right before.
I have partaken in a few bouquet catching battles myself, and I caught one at my friend Denise’s wedding. I thought my boyfriend (now hubby) at the time would fight for the garter on my behalf but he was CLUELESS and lost to someone else… BUT I was the next to get married out of my high school girlfriends after that catch. Who knows if that mattered or not, but it was fun and something to remember.

So the question is will YOU do the garter and bouquet toss or no? My advice is simple, IF you have a fun crowd, ready to get into the whole tradition..go with it! If not, just forget it all together because you would not want a small crowd of 2-3 people fighting on the dance floor to be the next bride/groom. That is just not fun..you need a full house on the floor. I have seen grown men crawl on the floor, women throw fists and if nothing else, it’s down right entertaining to watch!
